The Art Neon guide

How to Choose a Neon Sign for a Restaurant, Café or Bar

Choose a restaurant, café or bar neon sign by clarifying its purpose, placement, size, colour, branding, installation and daily operating conditions.

A neon sign can serve several different jobs in a restaurant, café or bar. It can identify the brand, create atmosphere, mark a service area, improve a photo backdrop or draw attention from outside. The best design starts by choosing one primary purpose rather than trying to make a single sign solve every visual problem.

Define the sign’s main purpose

Purpose Best design direction Placement focus
Brand recognition Logo or business name with strong readability Reception, main wall or storefront interior
Atmosphere Short phrase, symbol or mood-led design Dining room, lounge or bar area
Photo moment Memorable wording with clear space around it Feature wall or dedicated backdrop
Wayfinding Simple words or icons Pickup, bar, washroom or service zones
Window visibility Bold lettering and strong contrast Inside the window facing outward

If brand recognition is the goal, lead with the logo. If customer photos are the priority, create enough space for people to stand without blocking the design. A service sign should be direct and readable rather than decorative.

Choose the placement before the wording

Visit the space at different times of day. Note daylight, reflections, ceiling lights, furniture, menu boards and customer traffic. A sign that looks strong on an empty wall may be hidden after tables, plants or shelving are installed.

  • Keep the sign clear of heat, steam and wash-down areas unless the configuration is suitable.
  • Avoid cable routes across walkways or service paths.
  • Check whether customers will view it from seated or standing height.
  • Confirm that staff can reach the power and controls safely.
  • For window placement, review reflections from both inside and outside.

Size the sign for the room

A small counter sign can work at close range, while a logo across a dining room needs larger letters and open spacing. Measure the usable display area and estimate the normal viewing distance. A sign around 100–180 cm (39–71 in) wide is a useful starting range for many business feature walls, but the correct size depends on the wording, logo and wall.

For a photo backdrop, leave clear space around the sign and test how it appears in both portrait and landscape camera frames.

Use colour to support the brand and atmosphere

Warm tones can create an intimate mood, while cool whites and saturated colours can feel cleaner or more energetic. The background matters as much as the tubing colour. A bright wall may reduce contrast, and reflective surfaces can create glare in photographs.

If the brand uses an exact printed colour, select the closest suitable LED colour and review it as illuminated light. An exact Pantone or screen match cannot always be reproduced because light behaves differently from ink and pixels.

Logo, phrase or icon?

Logo signs

Best for recognition and consistency across locations. Send vector artwork and simplify small details that will not remain clear at the chosen size.

Phrase signs

Useful for atmosphere and social photos. Choose wording that is short, readable and connected to the venue rather than a generic slogan customers have seen everywhere.

Icon signs

A cup, cocktail, slice, flame or other simple symbol can mark a zone without adding more text. Icons work best when the outline is clean and recognizable.

Plan for daily commercial use

Restaurants and bars operate for long hours and require regular cleaning. Install the sign where staff can dust it safely without touching electrical connections. Disconnect power before cleaning and use a soft cloth; do not spray liquid directly onto the sign.

Keep the sign away from grease, direct steam, excessive heat and impact. If the environment is humid or semi-exposed, explain this before production so the correct construction can be reviewed.

Indoor, window or outdoor installation

A sign mounted inside a window remains an indoor installation only when it stays dry and protected. A sign outside, on a patio or in an exposed opening needs outdoor-rated construction. Power supplies and connections may need separate weather protection even when applicable sign components are rated for outdoor use.

Hardwired, large or permanent exterior work should be installed by a qualified professional under applicable property, electrical and municipal requirements.

Backings and visual integration

  • Clear cut-to-shape acrylic: keeps the wall visible and works with many interiors.
  • Full clear panel: creates a defined installation and can simplify alignment.
  • Black or coloured acrylic: increases contrast and can reinforce the interior palette.
  • Special finishes: should be reviewed for reflections, cleaning and photography.

Ordering checklist for hospitality businesses

  • Primary objective for the sign.
  • Logo or final wording.
  • Wall dimensions and straight-on photo.
  • Normal viewing distance.
  • Background colour and ambient lighting.
  • Indoor, outdoor or moisture-prone conditions.
  • Wall material, mounting height and power route.
  • Opening date and installation deadline.
  • Approval responsibility within the business.
