Most plug-in indoor LED neon signs are straightforward to mount, but the correct method depends on the wall material, sign weight, backing and installation height. The hardware supplied with a sign may not be suitable for every wall, so Canadian homeowners and businesses should inspect the location and choose appropriate anchors before drilling.
This guide covers common wall-mounted acrylic-backed signs. Large, hardwired, permanent outdoor or structurally complex installations should be handled by qualified professionals.
Before you begin
- Read the installation and warranty information supplied with the sign.
- Confirm the sign is intended for the selected indoor or outdoor location.
- Identify the wall construction and any hidden pipes or electrical cables.
- Check that the outlet and power-supply location are accessible.
- Have a second person assist with large or awkward signs.
- Disconnect power while mounting and routing cables.
Tools and materials
The exact tools depend on the surface. A typical installation may require a tape measure, level, pencil, drill, suitable drill bit, screwdriver, wall anchors, screws or standoffs and cable-management clips. Use a stud finder or appropriate detection tool where needed.
Choose fasteners for the wall
| Wall type | Installation consideration |
|---|---|
| Drywall | Use studs where possible or anchors rated for the combined sign and hardware load. |
| Wood | Use suitable wood screws and avoid splitting thin panels. |
| Brick | Use masonry bits and anchors intended for brick; avoid damaged mortar or uncertain substrates. |
| Concrete | Use concrete-rated anchors and appropriate drilling equipment. |
| Tile | Use a suitable tile bit and avoid cracking; verify the structure behind the tile. |
| Metal framing or cladding | Confirm the supporting structure and use fasteners designed for the material. |
If you cannot identify the wall or calculate a safe attachment, stop and consult an installer. Do not rely on adhesive strips for a sign that was designed to be mechanically mounted unless the manufacturer has approved that method.
Step 1: inspect the delivery
Open the package carefully and keep all protective material. Check the acrylic, tubing, cables, connectors, power supply and hardware. If there is shipping damage, photograph the box, label, packaging and sign before installation and contact support promptly.
Do not install or modify a visibly damaged electrical product.
Step 2: test the sign on a safe surface
Place the sign on a clean, stable surface where the tubing and acrylic are supported. Connect only the supplied compatible components and briefly test the lighting and controls. Disconnect power again before mounting.
Step 3: mark the final position
Hold a paper template, backing outline or the sign itself at the proposed location with assistance. Check the centre line, height and clearance from furniture, doors and ceiling fixtures. Use a level and mark the mounting holes lightly.
Measure twice. Closely spaced acrylic holes leave little room to correct inaccurate drilling.
Step 4: drill and install the anchors
Confirm that the marked positions are clear of hidden services. Use the drill bit and anchor specified for the wall. Install anchors flush and straight without overtightening or damaging the surface.
Step 5: mount the acrylic backing
Lift the sign by supporting the acrylic rather than pulling on the LED tubing or cables. Align the holes and tighten the mounting hardware evenly. The acrylic should sit securely without being twisted or compressed.
If the design uses standoffs, install each component in the correct order and keep the spacing consistent. Do not overtighten against acrylic, as excessive pressure can cause cracking.
Step 6: route the cable
Guide the low-voltage cable toward the power supply without sharp bends, pinching or tension. Keep it away from doors, drawers, cleaning equipment and foot traffic. Cable clips or a paintable cover can create a cleaner installation when appropriate.
Do not conceal a power supply in a sealed area that prevents normal ventilation. Keep plugs and controls accessible for disconnection.
Step 7: connect and test
With dry hands and a clear work area, connect the compatible power supply and switch the sign on. Check for stable illumination, secure mounting and safe cable routing. Test the dimmer or remote only if it is included with the selected configuration.
Outdoor and commercial installations
An outdoor sign must be ordered with weather-resistant construction. The power supply, controller, plugs and building connections may require additional protected enclosures even when applicable sign components are rated for outdoor use.
Wind exposure, snow, ice, wall condition and mounting height must be considered. Hardwired, large or permanent outdoor electrical work should be completed by a qualified professional under applicable building, electrical, property and municipal requirements.
After-installation care
- Disconnect power before cleaning.
- Use a soft dry microfiber cloth for routine dust.
- Do not spray liquid directly onto the sign.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners and strong chemicals.
- Inspect mounting points and cables periodically.
- Disconnect the sign if it flickers, smells unusual or shows cable damage.
Common installation mistakes
- Using drywall plugs that are not rated for the load.
- Mounting without checking for pipes and electrical cables.
- Lifting the sign by the tubing or power cable.
- Overtightening hardware against acrylic.
- Routing the cable where it can be pinched or pulled.
- Installing an indoor sign in a damp or outdoor location.
- Leaving outdoor electrical connections unprotected.
